Rendering in Manchester

Manchester walls take a lot of rain. We put on render that keeps it out and looks good doing it, from red brick terraces in Levenshulme to pebbledashed semis in Sale.

What our customers say

Copied word for word from our Google profile.

We’d been saying for about two years that the front of the house looked rough and finally bit the bullet. Honestly wish we’d done it sooner. The new render has completely changed the place and even the colour came out better than we expected. What I liked most was there was no drama decent communication, turned up, got through it and we weren’t chasing every five minutes. Looks proper smart now.

Really pleased with the rendering work carried out. They arrived on time, kept everything tidy throughout the job, and communication was excellent both before and during the work. Everything was explained clearly, and the whole process was smooth and stress-free. The finished result looks great, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for rendering work. Thanks again for a brilliant job!

Built for a wet city

Rain here often comes in sideways off the Pennines and the Irish Sea, and it finds every weak spot. A good-looking render job that is badly detailed will be stained, cracked or blowing within a few winters. These are the parts that stop that happening.

  • A bead at the base of the wall, kept clear of the ground so the render never wicks up water
  • Drip details over windows and doors so water falls clear instead of running down the face
  • Mesh through the whole base coat, with extra at every window corner where cracks start
  • Sills long enough to throw water past the new, thicker wall
  • Joints sealed around frames, pipes and vents
  • A water-shedding top coat that stays cleaner and slows green growth

Manchester houses we work on

Red brick terraces

Victorian and Edwardian rows across Levenshulme, Gorton, Moss Side and Stretford. Rear offshots and end gables are where rendering does the most good.

Interwar semis

Bay-fronted semis in Burnage, Urmston, Sale and Cheadle, many still in roughcast or pebbledash that is now cracked and grey.

Post-war estates

Spar-dashed and pebbledashed houses in Wythenshawe, Blackley and beyond, often ideal for a smooth render over the top.

Stone and newer builds

Stone cottages towards the Pennines that need breathable lime, and new extensions on blockwork that need mesh and movement beads.

Questions we get asked

How much does rendering cost in Manchester?

It depends on how big the walls are, how high, what is on them now and which render system suits them, so we do not quote from a web page. We visit, measure and give you one written price that includes the scaffold.

If anything turns up during the job that nobody could have seen at the visit, we stop and show you before doing anything that would change the price.

Can you render in Manchester weather?

Yes, but not on every day. Render cannot go on in rain, in frost or onto a soaking wet wall, and the top coat needs a dry spell to cure. We plan the job with spare days built in and use sheeting on the scaffold when showers come over. Most of the year that is enough.

Should I render the front of a red brick terrace?

It is your house and your call, but think it through. A rendered front changes the look of the whole street, and in a conservation area you may need permission. Plenty of owners keep the brick front and render the back, the gable end or the rear offshot, which is usually where the damp problems are.

Will render stop damp coming through my gable wall?

If rain is soaking through the brickwork, then a well detailed render system will keep it out. If the damp is coming from a leaking gutter, a failed damp course or high ground outside, render will not fix that. We look for the cause at the visit and tell you honestly which it is.

Do I need planning permission?

On an ordinary house outside a conservation area, usually not. Listed buildings always need consent, and flats do not have the same rights as houses. Parts of Didsbury, Chorlton, Heaton Moor and other areas are conservation areas, so check with your council's planning team first.

Can you match the house next door?

Usually, yes. Tell us which house you want to match and we will look at the texture and colour, then bring sample boards to hold against it.

How long does a job take?

A terraced front or back is usually a few days of rendering. A whole semi is often a week to ten days from scaffold up to scaffold down. Your quote gives you expected dates, and we keep you posted if the weather moves them.

Do you clear up afterwards?

Yes. Windows, doors, paths and plants are covered before we start, we tidy every evening, and when the scaffold comes down the site is swept and washed off.
